Introduction To Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) - Training Course Description

This one-day seminar gives a high-level introduction to Serial Attached SCSI (SAS). You will learn about the market forces that are driving the demand for storage. Market trends and current position of all the storage technologies will be discussed, along with examples of how SAS will be positioned in the SOHO, SMB, and Enterprise markets. You will receive an understanding of different attachment methodologies like DAS, NAS, SAN, iSCSI, FCIP, and iFCP. This course is not intended to drill down into the depths of the SAS technology, it was created to give you a high-level non-technical overview of what will drive SAS in the marketplace and how it basically works.

Once you have been introduced to the market, what drives it, and how SAS will be positioned, it is time to visit the technology behind SAS. We will first start with a SCSI review that will update you on what parallel SCSI was and what SAS inherits. You will learn about the SCSI architectural model, initiators, targets, and logical units, and how SAS compares to Ultra-320. You will learn how SAS will be the obvious predecessor to parallel SCSI.

Once we have traveled down memory lane, it is time to get in touch with the SAS architecture. This section will introduce you to every SAS architectural layer and provide you with an understanding of what SAS means to product development. You will learn what can be reused from SCSI and what will need to be created to make SAS work. Topics will include: SAS Domain and Architecture, devices, topologies, physical interfaces, encoding and serial links, addressing, and how devices move information. Once that is done you will be exposed to all the layers of the SAS Architecture starting with the Application Layer where you will learn about SCSI and the Management Application, to the Transport Layer where you will learn how the transport protocol works, and completing with the Physical Layer where you will learn what the connectors look like.
